As promised, these are the final tallies and breakdown of calls for 2024. Just for an idea, Highland DOES NOT run medical calls, so all 838 calls were fire related. 694 of them (83%) were in the town of McCandless.
As we move onto 2025, a quick Look back into 2024. Highland Volunteer Fire Department went through tremendous changes this past year both up and down, but we look forward to the new year and what it brings. ..Highland finished the year facing a record total of 838 calls for service this year. A breakdown of calls for the year will be released later on, once the final tallies in December are accounted for. ..As we face an increasing amount of fire calls every year, we are always looking for people to step up, and help where they can. Congratulations Chief! So happy to have you in our community! Our very own Chief Ryan Hawk was one of 257 law enforcement officials (and one of only two from the Pittsburgh region) to graduate from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy earlier in December. The FBI National Academy offers 11 weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training. Participants (who represent less than one percent of all law enforcement) must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend.Hawk began as an officer at McCandless in 2003 and became a detective in 2006. He was promoted to sergeant in 2013 and to lieutenant in 2017. In 2020, he was sworn in as chief of police.FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training. Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits all the National Academy courses offered. The program, founded in 1935, is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Va. (the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts).
Please keep our friends at Berkeley Hills in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through a difficult time.
Wishing everyone a very safe and Happy Holidays from your Highland Volunteers! 🚒🎁☃️
